mike Boorman - Formentera Fugitive (SLM016)

Secret Life would like to welcome new signing Mike Boorman to the label.

A man of many talents, it was Mike's writing that first put him on the Secret Life radar. It was with great amusement that we read his memoirs of a DJ tour…there aren’t many people who can claim to have toured around Russia with a badly stuffed fox that became so controversial that Mike and the Fox were facing expulsion from the country before a final reprieve came through.

It was another journalistic escapade that inspired Mike to create the title track for this release. After an interview with one of the first hippies to travel to Ibiza back in the 1960s, Mike hit the studio and made Formentera Fugitive; a moody and tense balearic journey inspired by the story of a hippy-cum-drug lord who went on the run from the biggest busts in Spanish history. 'Formentera Fugitive' is the sound of a man cracking up in paradise, hiding out in a villa in Formentera with the shutters down and only psychoactive substances for company, waiting for four agonising weeks to be rescued and smuggled out of the Balearics by boat. When the Ibizan sun goes down and night begins to fall, this is the kind of twisted ambience that will provide the ideal soundtrack.

The B-side 'Consequences' continues with the theme. Warm strings and bright summery Spanish flamenco guitar mix with weird sometimes off key glocken spiel, before a mad honky-tonk piano comes in to surprise us. It’s both lush and edgy in equal measure, with more than a touch of the eccentric, dare we say, just how Boorman likes it.
